I. ๐ Opening: The Holiday Listener
The week of Christmas can be one of the most emotionally intense windows of the year โ loneliness, social pressure, family dynamics, grief, overstimulation, travel fatigue, and the old myth that you need substances to relax or belong.
This episode is a reminder that a turning point can happen in a season. Not through perfection โ but through a nervous system finally choosing lifeโฆ and then building stability step by step.
II. ๐ Ocean Beach Origins: Light, Shadow, Sensitivity
๐ The Light
- Ocean Beach, San Diego โ salt on the skin, board under the arm, arcade tokens in the pocket
- Theme parks, friends, video games, riding bikes, bodyboarding
- A childhood with real joy and real memories
๐ The Shadow
- High sensitivity without a shield โ overwhelmed by the worldโs โvolumeโ
- Early emotional turbulence and trauma residue (even if you couldnโt name it)
- A deep need to belong โ the kind that makes risky choices feel like safety
Theme: sensitivity became kindling before it became a gift.
III. ๐ช๐ฟ Door One: Marijuana โ The First โSolutionโ
At 15, curiosity nudged me through the first real doorway โ not just trying it, but the moment my brain stamped it as a โsolution.โ The buzz, the laughter, the safetyโฆ it felt like relief.
- โEnhancement smokerโ identity: weed made life feel upgraded (surfing, games, music, food)
- Quiet costs: short-term memory, drive, and future hunger faded slowly
- Early signal: straight Aโs sliding to a 2.5 GPA โ not catastrophe, but drift
Key insight: addiction often charges you in currencies you canโt see at first: clarity, ambition, time.
IV. ๐น๏ธ Stalled Out + The Dream Job Illusion
College startedโฆ stoppedโฆ dropped. Momentum leaked away quietly โ late nights, skipped mornings, and the sense that life was happening without me.
๐ค Drift
- Classes blurred into avoidance
- Ambition dulled, the future narrowed
- The slow slide that looks โfineโ from the outside
๐ฎ The โDream Jobโ Trap
- Video game testing felt like permission to stay numb
- Selling weed on the side โ money, friends, validation
- The shift: more entourage, more pressure, more risk than ease
V. ๐ฅ Alcohol Arrives: โWhisky Finchโ and the Shame Loop
Psychedelics and pills didnโt lock in as my everyday โsolution.โ Alcohol did. A few drinks in, my brain decided: โThis is it. This is how we cope.โ
- Alcohol changed my personality: shy and sensitive โ loud, reckless, out of control
- Blackouts, fights, arrests, consequences โ nights I couldnโt remember
- Friends named the alter ego: โWhisky Finchโ โ funny at first, then a mask for chaos
- The loop: shame โ drink โ chaos โ shame โ drink
Truth: willpower doesnโt beat a nervous system on fire. Systems do.
VI. ๐ The Door Explodes: DEA Raid, DT Terror, and the โSecond Chanceโ That Wasnโt a Map
One morning, the door didnโt knock โ it exploded. The DEA swept through my place and cataloged everything: pounds of weed, cash stacks, a dealer ledger. My nervous system went into survival.
๐ The Terror Night
- Fear-driven drinking to numb the shock
- Withdrawal panic: shaking, racing heart, shadows moving on the walls
- โThis will finally scare me soberโ โ and then it didnโt
๐ Second Chance, No Roadmap
- Probation + community service
- AA attempt (90 meetings in 90 days): fellowship helped, approach didnโt fit my wiring
- Respect every path โ but I still didnโt have a model for my brain and body
Key insight: consequences can interrupt behavior โ they donโt automatically rewire the system.
VII. ๐ Switching Seats on the Titanic: Pills, Fire, and Geographic Escapes
I told myself I was โgetting healthierโ โ less alcohol, more pills. In reality, I was switching seats on the same sinking ship. My nervous system didnโt care about labels. It wanted relief.
- Valium, Xanax, Percocet, Norco โ whatever I could afford, whatever quieted the storm
- Wildfires displaced me; homelessness followed โ life caught fire for real
- Upstate NY felt like a fresh start: new job, girlfriend, baby on the way
- Temporary stability on the outsideโฆ unchanged patterns underneath
VIII. ๐ถ Fatherhood and the Opioid Trap: Love While Losing Myself
Two months before my daughter Willow was born, I made a fierce promise: I would be in her life. I tried to stand tall as Dad โ while dependency quietly tightened its grip.
๐ The Creep
- Daily opiates became the quiet center of my day
- Functioning on paper โ sinking inside
- When pills ran dry: the first true opioid withdrawal (terror, insomnia, panic)
๐ โHelpโ that Reset the Cycle
- Valium dulled the storm โ relief felt like mercy
- Suboxone helpedโฆ and then the toggling began (subs โ pills)
- Fake stability behind โDad modeโ
Key insight: functioning is not the same as freedom.
IX. ๐ญ Slide to Heroin + The Double Life
A cross-country move, big plans, a โnew beginningโโฆ and within months I was smoking heroin daily. The surreal twist: I was also training to become a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor.
- Dual lives: using between classes, between homework โ grades high, mask polished
- The day the double life shattered: my dad found the texts from my dealer
- Exposure, fear, shameโฆ and a strange relief that the hiding was over
Truth: addiction isnโt stupidity โ itโs a desperate intelligence trying to survive pain.
X. ๐ The Overdose: Line in the Sand
A doctor put me on methadone and Valium. Within 48 hours I overdosed โ blue face, not breathing. EMTs. Naloxone. Hospital. A medically induced coma. A lung infection from aspiration.
When the tube came out and I could breathe on my own, I saw the look on the teamโs faces: You made it back.
That was my line in the sand. I almost left Willow fatherless before age two. No more.
XI. ๐ง โจ The Hard Reset: Rebuilding Body, Brain, Spirit
This time, I didnโt just try to โquit.โ I rebuilt the system โ body, brain, identity, and nervous system regulation. (Not medical advice โ just my lived story.)
๐ก๏ธ Remove Destabilizers
- A rapid taper + clean break
- Cut cigarettes, caffeine, and sugar in quick succession
- Rebuilt diet so my baseline stopped swinging
๐งช Restore Chemistry
- Targeted support for dopamine, endorphins, serotonin, and GABA
- Nutrients + cofactors = the โhardwareโ foundation
- For the first time, PAWS didnโt break me โ because I had a biochemical floor
Key insight: when the hardware heals, the software finally has a fair shot.
XII. ๐๐ Christmas Catalyst: The Book That Cracked Me Open
At a family Christmas, my brother unwrapped The Game by Neil Strauss. I โborrowedโ it the moment he set it down. I devoured it in two days โ not for the pickup tricks, but for the transformation arc underneath.
- It flipped a switch: identity isnโt fixed
- I went into learning mode: NLP, Tony Robbins, psychology, influence, mindset
- Confidence rose, energy surged โ I started lifting, surfing, running, studying, living again
Theme: I stopped chasing reliefโฆ and started building power.
XIII. ๐ฅ Becoming the Counselor (for Real): Service, Mastery, Ignition
I interned at an Opiate Treatment Program and was offered a full-time counseling position in just one month. It became an apprenticeship in what actually helps humans change.
๐ง Full-Spectrum Training
- Person-Centered Therapy + Motivational Interviewing
- NLP, supplements, spirituality, nervous system regulation
- Seeing patterns across real humans โ not theories
โก Breakthroughs
- Tony Robbinsโ UPW โ firewalk + belief collapse
- Essay contest win โ full scholarship to Date With Destiny
- Breathwork: natural bliss that I used to chase with drugs
XIV. ๐ข Burning the Ships: Leaving the Clinic Harbor
My heart outgrew clinic work. I wanted to help people transform without being tethered to dispensing stronger substances. Inspired by the โburn the shipsโ story, I resigned and walked into the unknown.
Then I devoured business and marketing โ and helped my parents launch their herbal line (Self-Heal School / Self-Heal Balm), learning how to build something of my own online.
XV. ๐ Taking it Online: Opiate Addiction Support and the Long Quiet Beginning
In 2014, I started blogging to help people break free from opioids. For months, no one came. I kept writing anyway โ and slowly, the first comments appeared: โThis helped me quit.โ
- Traffic built. Trust built. Impact built.
- Free resources โ paid courses โ coaching and recovery blueprints
- Six years later: 300+ free articles and millions of visitors
Principle: helping first creates momentum that lasts.
XVI. ๐๏ธ Amplifying the Signal: Podcasts, Fit Recovery, Thousands Helped
The signal expanded โ and so did the mission.
๐ Elevation Recovery
- 300+ episodes
- ~500,000 downloads across 60+ countries
- A global window into what people actually struggle with โ and what actually works
๐ง Fit Recovery
- Head Coach (2020)
- 1-1 alcohol coaching + weekly (then twice-weekly) groups
- Flagship courses: Mindset, Supplements, Spiritual Intelligence
Outcome: years of pattern recognition became the raw material for a coherent system.
XVII. ๐ Why Strategic Recoveryโข Exists: When Fragments Become a Framework
In 2025, I founded Strategic Recoveryโข โ not as another โmethod,โ but as a unified field theory of addiction recovery: science-based and soul-based, integrating the whole person.
๐๏ธ The 5 Pillars
- Biochemical
- Psychological
- Social
- Environmental
- Spiritual
Why it matters: most approaches fixate on one dimension. Strategic Recovery rebuilds the ecosystem.
๐งญ The 5 Phases
- Preparation โ Detox โ Repair โ Rewire โ Transcend
- Recovery is staged. Each stage needs a different strategy.
- Wrong tool, wrong time = unnecessary suffering.
Core line: itโs the model I wish existed when I was drowning โ because it wouldโve saved me years.
XVIII. ๐โโ๏ธ Where I Am Now: Simple, Luminous Life
Today, I live a half-block from the Pacific with my bird, Papaya. My daughter โ now a teenager โ is the joy of my life. I create podcast episodes, long-form articles, and Strategic Recovery Blueprints to help people rebuild chemistry, calm nervous systems, reshape identity, and design a life where relapse becomes unlikely.
Simple truth: service is the path.
XIX. ๐ Core Convictions: The Five Beliefs Behind Everything
- Addiction isnโt a moral issue. Your brain adapted to survive. Shame was never the solution.
- Biochemistry matters. Repair the hardware (dopamine, endorphins, serotonin, GABA) so life becomes manageable again.
- Strategy beats willpower. Sequence matters. The right tools at the right time reduce suffering.
- Spiritual intelligence is practical. Meaning and love stabilize freedom at the identity level.
- Recovery is a design problem. We can engineer environments and systems that make relapse unlikely.
When these are honored, freedom stops being a miracle and starts being a pattern.
XX. ๐๏ธ The Holiday Bridge: If Youโre Listening Right Nowโฆ
If youโre listening during Christmas week and you feel trapped, ashamed, lonely, or overwhelmed โ youโre not weak. Youโre likely dysregulated. And dysregulation is not your identity. Itโs a stateโฆ and states can change.
You donโt need perfection. You need a plan, a floor, and one brave decision that says: โI choose life.โ
XXI. ๐งญ A Simple 24โ72 Hour Mini-Plan
1) ๐ค One Honest Reach-Out
Text or call one safe person. No speech needed. Just: โIโm having a hard time โ can you check in with me?โ
2) ๐ง One Nervous System Stabilizer
Food, hydration, sleep protection, sunlight, a short walk, a shower โ simple regulation beats heroic willpower.
3) ๐ก๏ธ One Boundary
Remove substances, avoid high-risk events, create an exit plan, or change environment. Precision boundaries win.
4) ๐ง One Identity Sentence
Say it out loud: โIโm rebuilding.โ or โI choose life.โ Identity leads behavior.
Remember: your turning point might not look dramatic. It might look like a quiet decisionโฆ repeatedโฆ until your system believes it.
